A CLOSER LOOK

Preventive care: the essentials.

What matters, what to check, and where to go from here.

  1. 01

    Separate screening from investigating symptoms

Screening looks for problems in people without the relevant symptoms. New symptoms need their own assessment and should not wait for a routine wellness appointment. Tell the provider what you want to prevent and what you are currently experiencing so the visit can address both appropriately.

  2. 02

Bring the information that guides recommendations

Prepare previous screening dates and results, vaccinations, medicines and relevant family history. Recommendations depend on personal circumstances and local guidance; there is no single package that every adult should repeat annually. Ask which items are due and why.

  3. 03

    Discuss benefits and possible downsides

A test can lead to reassurance, a useful intervention, an uncertain finding or additional testing. Ask what the result would change, how accurate the test is for its intended use, and what happens after a positive result. This makes consent more meaningful than choosing the largest panel.

  4. 04

    Keep the follow-up visible

Before leaving, confirm the next step, the person responsible for results and the expected timing. Keep the plan with the original reports. The preventive-checkup guide offers a preparation checklist, and the lab guide explains how to retain the units and context that make results useful.
