Supplements: the essentials.
- 01
How to evaluate supplements
Begin with the reason for considering a supplement. A confirmed need, a professional recommendation and a broad marketing claim are different starting points. Natural does not automatically mean safe or effective.
- 02
Details to check before choosing
Check active ingredients and dose per serving, overlapping products and medicine interactions. A quality certification does not by itself prove the advertised health benefit.
- 03
Make the ingredient list actionable
For each product, write down the ingredient and dose per serving, the amount you intend to take and why. Compare it with other products you already use so you do not unknowingly duplicate an ingredient. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about interactions and whether your goal requires testing or another approach.
- 04
Check evidence before spending
A large number of ingredients is not proof of effectiveness, and natural does not guarantee safety. Look for evidence about the exact preparation and the population studied. For ingredient-specific questions, use the NIH supplement resources.
